Known for its rich heritage and vibrant shopping scene, Chester promised a unique blend of history and modern lifestyle, and it certainly delivered.

Driving from Rhoose in the Vale of Glamorgan to Chester, a journey of around four and a half hours, we were excited to finally explore a city we had long heard so much about.

At the centre of its retail offering is a fascinating mix of old and new. The famous two-tiered Rows, dating back more than 700 years, sit alongside contemporary destinations such as the Grosvenor Shopping Centre, the new Chester Market with its artisan flair, and the independent boutiques of Watergate Street. It is a city where history and shopping coexist beautifully.

A Victorian railway hotel
Our base for the night was The Queen at Chester Hotel, an iconic landmark directly opposite the railway station, which makes it an ideal choice for drivers and rail travellers alike. Originally opened in 1860 as a railway hotel, its grand Victorian façade and storied past give it a distinctive sense of occasion from the moment you arrive.

Our room
The hotel was bustling and lively, adding to its sense of character. We were delighted to discover that, although we had booked a standard double, we had been upgraded to a superior room on the second floor. The space was generous and well appointed, with a super comfortable bed, a large flat screen TV, a mini fridge and a sleek shower room. Our room overlooked the charming Palazzo style gardens, a peaceful contrast to the energy of the hotel.

Eating and drinking
The bar and restaurant areas were equally impressive, beautifully styled and inviting. But with Chester’s thriving food and wine scene just five minutes’ walk away, we couldn’t resist heading out. The nearby streets were alive with atmosphere, and on such a lovely evening it was the perfect opportunity for a little relaxed people watching over dinner.

After a wonderfully quiet and comfortable night’s sleep, we woke refreshed and ready for breakfast. The offering was exactly what you would expect from a four star hotel: a wide selection of hot and cold options, fresh pastries, breads and juices, more than enough to set us up for the journey home.

The verdict
For those seeking a stay right in the heart of a city brimming with history, shopping and dining, Chester is an excellent choice, and The Queen at Chester provides a perfectly positioned, characterful base from which to enjoy it all.

Travel Life Tip!
Part of the attraction of this hotel is its competitive pricing; it is real value for money. We found some excellent offers online, and we were upgraded on arrival. Ordinarily we might have gone for a Premier Inn, but a larger room, a bath and the great location tipped the scales on this occasion. It pays to shop around.
