Herefordshire rarely gets the fanfare of its more famous neighbours, the Cotswolds, the Wye Valley’s better-known stretches, or the Brecon Beacons just over the border. Yet this quiet corner of the Welsh Marches has quietly become one of our favourite short-break destinations, a gentle landscape of orchards, cider farms and market towns, with the cathedral city of Hereford itself making an ideal base for a weekend of slowing down.
On a recent visit, we discovered that Herefordshire’s appeal goes well beyond its scenery. Tucked on the outskirts of the city, Holmer Park Health Club & Spa gave us the perfect excuse to build a weekend around rest, recharging and a little gentle exploring in between.

A spa at the heart of a health club
Holmer Park is not a dedicated destination spa in the traditional sense, it operates as a health club first, with spa facilities woven into that wider setting. That gives it a different feel from a quiet, candlelit retreat, there is a genuine buzz of regular members alongside spa guests, and the pool is built for proper swimming rather than floating about in the half light.
What it does offer is excellent value and a genuinely well-run couples’ treatment, our Work It Out Deep Muscle Massage was delivered with real skill and care, and the wider facilities were spacious, well maintained and easy to navigate.
Our sister title Wye Life sent reviewer Justine Bullock to put Holmer Park through its paces in full, and you can read her complete verdict on the treatment, the facilities and the lunch here.

Making a weekend of it
The beauty of Herefordshire is that a spa morning is just one part of the story. Hereford Cathedral, home to the extraordinary Mappa Mundi, is well worth an hour or two, and the city’s compact centre makes for an easy wander between cafes and independent shops.
For those who want to stretch their legs, the Wye Valley offers some of the gentlest, prettiest walking in the country, while Herefordshire’s cider trail gives the weekend a properly local flavour, look out for small producers offering tastings around the county. Book lovers might also stretch the trip a little further to Hay-on-Wye, the celebrated town of secondhand bookshops, just a scenic drive away. Worth checking out Books Life too if you’re an avid reader.

Getting there
Hereford sits comfortably within reach for a weekend break from South Wales, the Midlands or the West Country, with good road links via the A49 and A465, and a direct rail line into Hereford station. Holmer Park itself is a short drive from the city centre, making it an easy add-on to a wider Herefordshire stay rather than a destination in its own right.
Whether you treat it as the centrepiece of your trip or simply a restorative pause between exploring, Holmer Park is a reminder that some of the best weekend breaks are found not in the obvious places, but just over the border, in the quieter corners of the Marches.
