Some birthdays call for big parties. Others deserve a beautifully judged escape – the kind that mixes indulgence, exploration and a little everyday luxury. For my husband’s birthday, we chose a short break at the Oxford Belfry Hotel & Spa, and it proved to be the perfect base for celebrating somewhere we genuinely love: this elegant corner of England.

We’ve always been drawn to the area for different reasons. My husband is happiest wandering historic streets, admiring architecture and slipping quietly into churches with his camera in hand. I, on the other hand, am more than content discovering shops – especially the indies. This trip let us do both and then some.

During our stay we explored Cirencester, Cheltenham, Marlow and managed to pop over to Henley-on-Thames, which all have some truly stunning independent boutiques – and of course Oxford, whose honey-coloured buildings and collegiate calm never fail to impress (one of our favourites is The Covered Market) – some real gems in there). Having such varied destinations within easy reach made the Oxford Belfry an ideal hub for days out followed by restful evenings.

From the moment we arrived back at the hotel, relaxation took over. One of the first things we noticed was the scent that drifts throughout the property – subtle, calming and instantly welcoming. Our executive room was genuinely stunning, with a layout that felt both spacious and thoughtfully designed. The bathroom was a highlight: a generous bath with an overhead shower, lovely quality toiletries, fluffy robes and all the details you’d hope for in a higher-end stay. The bed was large and supremely comfortable, dressed in crisp sheets, and the room itself was spotless.

Service is where the Oxford Belfry really shines. Every member of staff encountered was friendly, engaging and genuinely keen to make our stay special (shout out for Lilly, our waitress, she was brilliant). Dining was a standout experience. The food was exceptional, and it was a real pleasure to meet Chris (Christian), the Head Chef, who came out to chat with us. His passion was infectious as he talked us through the menu and explained how chefs across the wider hotel group regularly come together to collaborate and develop fresh, interesting dishes. It showed.

Dinner was beautifully executed, and breakfast the following morning was equally impressive. Buffet-style breakfasts can so often disappoint with lukewarm food, but not here – everything was well cooked, plentiful and properly hot.

Facilities are another big draw. There’s plenty of free parking (always a plus), along with a good-sized pool, gym and sauna, plus a spa offering Elemis treatments. We didn’t manage to book treatments this time – our schedule was simply too full of exploring and eating well – but it’s a very good reason to return.

What guests’ say…
The hotel’s growing reputation is echoed by guest feedback online.
One recent visitor writes: “From check-in to check-out, everything was flawless. The staff couldn’t do enough for us, and the food was some of the best we’ve had in a hotel.” Another adds: “The spa and pool area were immaculate, the rooms beautifully clean, and the atmosphere calm and luxurious – we’ll definitely be back.”

“I visited the spa for a day and it was wonderfully relaxing – all of the staff were genuinely helpful, and my treatments were absolutely blissful. My beauty therapist, Becca, was lovely and tailored the sessions to suit what I wanted. Lunch was delicious too, making the whole experience feel like a true treat.”
“Lovely spa day – the treatment rooms were clean, calming and beautifully scented, and my two treatments were really enjoyable. The staff were friendly and attentive, and coffee and a pastry included in the package were a lovely extra touch.”

Always worth checking their socials for offers and incentives.
For us, it was the perfect birthday escape: memorable, relaxing and already tempting us back.
